ALEXANDRITE
The first alexandrites were found in Russia in the Urals in 1830. But these days there are practically no quality stones on the world market. Other countries are helping out. The most interesting property of the mineral is that they change their color from green tones to reddish tones, depending on the type of lighting. This is a stone for those who understand. Indeed, it can often look dark in normal light.
Alexandrite is the color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. chrysoberyl is an aluminate of beryllium with the formula BeAl2O4. Alexandrite is the third-hardest frequently encountered natural gemstone and lies at 8.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, between corundum (9) and topaz (8).
HEALING PROPERTIES
Alexandrite is highly touted as having regenerative powers and assists in centering the self, reinforcing self-esteem and enhancing the ability to experience joy and beauty. It also known to bring balance between your physical manifest world and the unmanifest astral or spiritual world. Alexandrite will unlock crown chakra and allow access to the healing energy and loving support of the universe. Alexandrite is known to help with physical ailments. It’s highly recommended for those who are recovering from surgery or from a prolonged illness and believed that this stone can improve blood circulation by purifying the blood and strengthening the blood vessels.
FOR JEWELRY
In products, alexandrites are rarely larger than 5 carats due to their high rarity. Because the color of the stones is often dark, then they try to make their frame as open as possible from all sides. Please note that the purity of the Ural chrysoberyls with color change in their mass is much inferior to the purity of stones from Tanzania, Brazil, India and Sri Lanka. It should be noted that the “sprinkling” of small round Brazilian specimens looks great in the items.
STONES IN A SET
If you want a pair of alexandrites for earrings and a ring, then forget about stones larger than 2-3 carats each. There is a chance to find something identical in all parameters on the world market if we turn to not very large stones from Brazil. Sri Lanka may also help out from other countries. Get ready that the cost of the set will be higher compared to a single piece, the price of a stone from the set can be 1.5-2 times more.
COLLECTOR
For sophisticated collectors, there is an opportunity to collect alexandrite from the main mining countries: Tanzania, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, and of course, Russian, from the Urals. Many foreign collectors dream of getting a mineral crystal in the form of a hexagonal “pawn” in their collection, which they find in the Urals. Note that similar “pawns” are now found in Zimbabwe. Also of interest may be rare alexandrites with the effect of a cat’s eye, which are cut into a cabochon shape.
INVESTOR
Alexandrites are constantly growing in price due to high demand and very small number of quality cut samples in the world market. For investment purposes, specimens from 5 carats with good reverse and cleanliness are an excellent option. It is worth choosing alexandrite without noticeable inclusions and cracks. Pay attention to the presence of an expert opinion from a reputable laboratory, because this is the only proof of the origin.
